The Old Woman

I watched as she pulled weeds
From her front yard
She was bent over with age
Her hair white
And pulled into a bun
She moved slowly
In a world of her own
Memories of times past
Floated through her mind
She was unaware of those around her
Of cars passing
Of birds chirping
Her thoughts drifted back
To her own country
The place of her birth
She thought of her husband
Now gone
And of her children
All of them
Making a life of their own
She is alone
With her memories
Some pleasant
Others
Sad
She is nearing the end
Of her life
She knows her time here
Is short
And she puts in her day
Sorting through her memories
Which ones she wants to remember
Until her last breath
And which ones are now unimportant
Not much can be done about those
Memories
That left such a void
And mark in her life
She will gracefully continue
On
Moving from day to day
Until her Lord and Master
Will come for her
He will take her by the hand
And guide her
Through the veil
That separates this life
From the next
He will hold her tight
Until she is on the other side
Where she will be greeted
By so many that have gone on before her
And she will be home at last

THE ELDERLY COUPLE

Today I passed an elderly couple
Well dressed
Both walking with canes
It seemed that they were
Both engrossed in their own thoughts
For neither were talking
I wondered what she was thinking
As she stumbled along
Each footstep
Seemed an effort
Was she going back
To her youth
Or was she thinking
Of their children
And grandchildren
What was she thinking
As she so slowly moved
And he
What was going through his mind
It seemed he was a man of means
At one time
A man of importance
For he still walked with pride
With an erect back
And a proud look
He wore a fedora
Something you rarely see now
And what was he thinking
As he himself moved
With such pain
Did he go back
To when everyone respected him
And of his accomplishments
Was he thinking back over the years
And was he happy with his choices
They continued to walk
They know the end is coming
For they had lived a long life
And had seen the times change
Their lives had taken them through wars
And depression
They no doubt had known hard times
And good times
And now in their twilight years
Their time here on earth
Will soon end
Will they die in peace
Knowing that they did all things right
Will they know that there is no doubt
Of where they will spend eternity
Or will there be some doubt
And wishing things could have been different
Why do people wait until the end is near
And then wonder
Why didn’t they cross that road
Earlier
Perhaps they both are satisfied
With their life
And how it turned out
For we only walk down this road
Once
Only once
Are we walking down the right path
For us

A Meeting With Alcoholics Anonymous

I was fortunate to sit in an Alcoholics Anonymous open meeting last night
And while sitting there
I glanced around at the members
Male and female
Various ages
All sitting listening
To the speaker tell her life story
I, too, sat in awe
I am not sure what I expected
And I didn’t know that I would be in for a shock
I listened with an open mind
And open ears
Listening to a story that one would only find
In a fiction book
Yet, this was real
I heard what had caused this
Young lady to turn to alcohol
And heard the years that followed
Downward to a living hell it was
I continued to glace around the room
Taking in each and every one in the room
And I realized that not only this lady had a story to tell
But, each and every one did.
Some, their life story would bring one to tears
To know that this goes on
Day after day
And these are members that are on the road to recovery
What of those that still wander the street
What of those that sell all they have
For just one more drink
And I heard how each and every one
Had more faith stored in them for God
Than most avid Church members
To find God there in that room
A room filled with past alcoholics
Yet they claim that they are still
An alcoholic
Just one drink
And they will be right back to the beginning
Yet, sitting there I found
That there is hope
Hope for each and every one
And that hope is in their trust
In God
That God is their only answer
To pulling them out of the dungeon
For it is a dungeon that they were in
Locked in a dark room
With no windows
No one to talk with
No one that cares
They are the lost people
That have used alcohol to forget
What they think of themselves
But looking around
I saw they each and every one had hope
Hope in the fact
That they now have faith
Faith in God
To know that He will help them
And for each one
He has
And they just know
They know without a shadow of a doubt
That God will continue to hold their hand
And bring them back to a knowing
That everything is going to be all right
Everything will be all right.

My Steps

How is it that I have been allowed
To see so much
In my lifetime
To see between the lines
Of those around me
I feel their hurts
Share their happiness
I can know their walk
Which has taken them to such depths
Where darkness suffocates one
And fear dwells
And death surround them
Desiring their life
Desiring to snuff them out
Like a dwindling candle
And I can know the walk
Of those that have risen far above
Where the sun shines
And everything is all right
I have walked in their shoes
And can comfort those
That need comforting
And feel their hurts
For their hurts run deep
No one else can know
Unless they have walked in their shoes
And, even I
Even I cannot know their exact hurts
For each one has their own hurts
That bring them down so low
That their only way out
Is death
How they welcome death
It would be better than life
At the moment for them
How we need to help those
That walk down in the depths of the earth
And cannot find their way out
Wandering around in the dark
Not knowing where the key is
To open the door
That would shed light
Onto their hurting soul
We need to help these hurting people
For they are our brothers
And our sisters
They really are us
What if
What if we were to be born
In their family
Live in their country
Dwell in their home
What if
We need to be so thankful
For God has blessed us so
Never take anything for granted
For we could have walked in their shoes
We could have felt their pain
And needed a helping hand
Needed the love of someone that cared
Be ever thankful
That you know the Lord
We need to teach the hurting
We need to reach out
And touch these poor
Weakened souls

Love

How we wander to and fro
Going here
Going there
How we need the love of another
Be it human or a pet
We need the love
We need to know that another living being
Is in the same space that we occupy
How we need touch
And holding
And caressing
We so need that
And we wander here and there
Looking for that one
That will fill the void
That surrounds us
We need acceptance
A knowing that someone cares
If we live or die
We need holding
We need to know that we are loved
We all need that
It is part of what God has given us
To give love
And to receive love
How many of us let this slide
And we wander through life
Looking for something to take the place
Of love
We look and search
And do we find it
Some do
Some don’t
And we spend a life-time
Wandering
And searching
For the pot of gold
Called love
At the end of the rainbow
But is it there
Is it there
We search for the one
The only one
And by-passing the One
Each and every time
We by-pass Him
With every turn
Every thought
Why do we do such a thing
When He stands with open arms
Waiting for us to cuddle in
And look up
And know that everything
Will be all right.
Everything will be all right.

Daily We Pass By

Daily we pass by other human beings
We pass them in the stores
We pass them on the street
In cars
Walking
Running
Oh to take time out to look at their faces
Some happy
Some sad
I wonder about their sadness
And the happiness in others
We drift through life
Turning our head
Away from those who
Might invade our life
In such a way
That would bring us grief
We don’t take time out to inquire
Everyone has their own problems
How can we take on the problems
Of another
Let them deal with their life
We have our own life to filter through
And many times we foul up what little
Has been given us
And so we continue on our way
Not caring for the hurting
The lonely
The forgotten
Just a pleasant word from us
A gentle touch
An acknowledgment
That we care
That is all it takes
To place a smile on the
Face of a hurting person
Just a knowing
That I care
That I am here for you
And worry about you
That is all they need
To make it through the day
Onto another

TO QUESTION GOD

How easy it is to question God
When things are not going
As we expect them
We make our plans
And decide our daily life
Not taking into consideration
That the decisions we make
And the steps we take
Are not our own
Who then really directs them
There are only two forces
If we walk in faith
God will direct our steps
If we walk in evil
Evil will direct our steps
How weak and foolish we are
To bend to what fleshly powers that be
How blind we are to fall prey to our weaknesses
How weak we are to fall into a trap
A trap that grabs us
Pulls us in
Sinking us to the bottom of the well
Where darkness reigns
How hard it is to climb out of the darkness
But we can
We can
But would it not be better to resist this evil
To recognize it
And not fall into the trap
How evil prepares a most luscious trap
So that we become blind
Walk right in
Willingly
We have to recognize this
And resist
Once we start to resist
God will strengthen this resistance
And pull us through
He will
But we need to recognize this weakness
Call out
Reach out
His hand is ever ready
To pull us up
And out.

TEARS

As humans we can produce tears
Tears of joy
Or those of sorrow
Such emotions
We show
Unlike any other of God’s species
We are able to shed tears of
Joy and sorrow
Such an expanse
These two emotions
One for elation
The other for heartache
Two opposites
Yet the same tears
God given reaction
To how we feel
How can we produce
Such tears when our heart aches
Or have such joy
That only tears can
Show just how elated we are
We are indeed
A people created
In His image
We are
For He shed tears of sorrow
And no doubt
Sheds tears of joy
Over us

WHAT IS LIFE

What is life
And what is that we want
We are born in this time in space
To walk the earth
To breathe the air
And to feel the presence
Of another human being
Our eyes take in the beauty around us
And the ugliness that sits on the sidelines
Our ears hear the songs of the birds
And the silence of death
Our steps take us to places
That men dreamed of walking
We take so much for granted
We expect so much
We are capable of love
And of hate
We are capable of healing
And of killing
We are a people of peace
Yet we enter into war
We humans are so much alike
Yet so opposite
We are people of truth
Yet we deceive and lie
What makes us do the things we do
Be it good or bad
What makes us tick
What enters our mind
To create
And to destroy
We are capable of multiplying
Yet we don’t care for that which
We brought into the world
Animals treat their young better
At times
Life has its way of blinding us
And making a fool out of us
Are we really capable of loving
As we wish to be loved
Are we really capable of seeing
And hearing only good
Or must we take in the bad as well
We have so much to learn here on earth
Before we are taken
To return no more
To be not given another chance
So much to learn
In so short a time

TO FIND A FRIEND

To find a true friend
Is like panning for gold
We must search for it
Sift it
Sift it thoroughly
Remove anything
That has attached itself to it
See if it is pure to the eye
And to the soul
To find this friend
Who will always be there
No matter what
Will be someone that you can lean on
One that will support you
In all that you do
Will give advice
Gently
Will be there when your tears flow
Will hold you and comfort you
This is a true friend
One that does not speak ill of you
Will always be there to lift you up
This to me is a true friend
And when you find this friend
Hold tight
Don’t sell this friend off to the highest bidder
Hold this friend close to you and
Cherish this special one
Don’t take this friend for granted
Always let them know just how much
They mean to you
For Jesus calls us ‘friend’
Does He not
He considers us His friend
Closer than a brother
Mother or Father
This is what a friend is

THE OLD REC HALL

I passed by the old Army Recreation Hall today
With its windows boarded up
And thoughts of times past
When it captured the very spirit
Of men and women who must have walked
Through the doors
I could visualize young lovers
Dancing, holding each other so tight
I could see a wife leaning into her husband
Holding him
And tears running down her face
Knowing that he will leave her tomorrow
To take his place in protecting our country
I could see several lonely women
Sitting on the side of the room
Watching as couples waltzed past them
They would try and remember when they too
Waltzed around the room
Now they feel the pains of loneliness
Either through death
Or departure to the front lines
Worry captured the faces of some of the ladies
While others would turn back time
And remember their loved one
Holding them, caressing them
I could hear the music playing
Music that still today brings about memories
And tears
This old recreation hall
Holds so much of the past
Holds so many memories
Of those that have passed
We cannot forget these
Young men and women
Many taken in their prime of life
Never to experience the thrill
Of seeing their children grow
Or their grandchildren
These young men and women
Gave us so much
They gave their life
Let us not forget them
Let their closure on this life
Ever be remembered
By us
Who remain

LORD

Lord, You are the air I breathe
And the sun in the eastern sky
You are the stars that shine
And the moon at night
You are in the rain that falls
And the snow in winter
You are in the birds that chirp
And the animals that roam
You are within the deepest of oceans
And within the shallowest of streams
You are in the finest of grasses
And it the tallest oak
You are within the skies above
And in the deepest parts of earth
You are within all you have created
Is there anywhere You cannot be found
You are within my very being
You are there
Always there
From before You created all
You were there within me
For Lord
You are
You are the great I am

Hurting People

Daily we cross the paths
Of those that carry such a burden
That causes them grief
One can see the pain
And the load that they carry
Yet
We pass them by
As we scurry along
We have much to do
And no time for those that hurt
No time to offer help
Or a thoughtful word
Yet they reach out
Even ask for help
We feel we have enough
Of our own to deal with
How can we help another
How can we
We have no time
To care for ourselves
Let alone someone
With a burden
Yet, we may be in that same place
Where they now stand
We may be there
One day
And will there be someone that cares
Someone that will offer help
As we sink deeper and deeper
Into our burdens
Is there anyone that really cares
I know of One
I know of One
That will take all my burdens
And give me freedom
Yes, I know of One

Tomorrow

The near future
Where we hold all our dreams
Plans
For what might be
For some of us
Tomorrow
Will never come
All our dreams
And plans
Laid waste
To be packed up
And placed in the casket
With us
Why do we waste such
Valuable time
Time that we could enjoy today with
Today
What of today
We’ve made no plans for today
All our energy
Taken up with tomorrow
How foolish we are
Walking blindly along
Not paying attention
That the years are being peeled away
Like one takes the layers off an onion
Layer upon layer
Until just the inner core is left
Will we have the energy
And the health to fulfill
Those plans and dreams
Doubt it
Yet our entire life has been
So swallowed up in tomorrow
A day that just always seems out of our grasp
But we continue reaching out
Trying to pull into us
That which may never be ours
Enjoy today
For tomorrow
Was never promised to us
It was never promised to us

FOREVER HIDDEN

Tonight I sat in a room of men and women in their senior years

And as I looked around at their faces

Faces that have seen much during their years

What memories did they store within their minds

What hurts and happy times have they so hidden

My eyes fell upon one elderly lady

She sat listening to the music that penetrated the room

Music from the past

And I wondered what flowed through her mind

As her gaze seemed to go beyond the musicians

Into some far off world

What was she thinking

Was it of happy times

Times that brought her joy at one time

Or was it something sad

Sad enough to bring tears forth

We have such hurts and happiness

Stored within us

Do we allow any outsider to seek that out of us

Or do we take these hurts and sorrows

Joys and happiness

With us to our grave

I again glanced at this lady

That held such deep secrets

I noticed the deep furrows that crossed her forehead

And down the sides of her face

Each one must have deepened with each sorrow

There were no laughter lines

Just saddness

What was her story

No doubt it would fill a book

What were her deepest of secrets

That lay so deeply hidden

Don’t we all store hurts

And secrets

And happy times

Within our hearts and minds

And, yes, we do take these

Precious memories

And hurts

With us when we die

To be forever hidden

Hidden within the shell of a body

That once felt love and passion

And shed tears of joy

And felt the pain of grief

To be forever gone.

Young Lad

The young lad walked along the side of the road
Kicking any small stone that crossed his path
His head hung down
His long bangs covered his eyes
I wondered how he could possibly see
He reached to his back-pack
Hoisted it up higher on his back
One could see his mind was elsewhere
Off into a land of make-belief
Where all things were right
For him
Thoughts crossed my mind of what he could possibly be thinking
Was he living in a unhappy home
Where both parents were constantly arguing
Was his place of abode one that he lived under constant abuse
Or was his unhappiness of his own making
One that he resented the ‘house rules’
Rules he felt did not apply to him
I wondered as he passed on by
What would become of him
I could see him in later years
Standing on the street corner
Begging for his next meal
Shabby clothes,
Un-kept appearance
But, I could have seen him
Through such different eyes
Eyes that saw a bright young man
Full of life
Married and his children playing out back of their home
Which road will this young lad take
I wondered
As he kicked another stone
And watched as it skipped off into the grass
I wondered what his future will be
For I saw sadness upon his face
A face filled with the unknown
Filled with a sense of being not wanted
Filled without knowing the love of a parent
What will his life be like
In future years

Broken Marriage

I watched as a young married couple broke up
And went their separate ways
They had a young baby
I often wondered which parent became
The sole responsibility to raise this child
The young lady left an empty wine glass
Sitting on the back patio table
All winter I passed by their empty home
And watched as the leaves dropped in the Fall
Filling the glass and covering the table
The winter storms came
The blinding snow
And the empty glass remained intact
Spring arrived, and blossoms were beginning to erupt
And birds were mating
Everything was coming alive
After such a long winter
Today I passed by their house again
And, noticed the wine glass still
In the same spot where the young lady
Had placed her final grasp on married life
I noticed that someone had placed a baby swing
Out for the garbage
I wondered about the baby
Where was it now
Was it happy
Was the young lady happy
And what of the young man
Has he gone his own way
Making a new life for himself
And what of her
What forward move has she made
And the baby
What about the baby
Left to be raised by one parent
Missing the other
It will know no different
It will be like so many others out there
Being raised by a single parent
A parent too tired to give the love
And attention it so desires
Why do young people marry
And then go their separate ways
Walking away from responsibility way too soon
They take no time to sit and talk
They just move on
Leaving an empty wine glass
A baby swing
A broken heart
And I wonder if their life
Would ever be the same
Would the baby ever get to really know
The other parent
The stranger that visits every so often
Will they ever bond
Ever

SUDDENLY

Suddenly
Abruptly
Without warning
The quake will be felt
The earth will split
Panic will stir in the very hearts
Of men on earth
The skies will darken
Indeed
They will darken
Hearts will melt
Fear will grasp the very mind of man
Fear
Fear of the unknown
Fear what is happening
Around them
The stench of death
Will engulf the nostrils of all those
That witness this most great catastrophe
And where to run
To escape this great wrath
That is being out-poured on earth
Man will curse
The very God that can save them
The skies will split
As one splits an apple
Yes
The heavens will open
Exposing the brightness
The wonder
The beauty
Man will look up
See the Great One
See Him riding forth
Coming for His people
A people that have yearned
To see the Great One
Oh for those that fear
Have no fear
Look up
For your Redeemer comes forth
With outstretched arms
A forgiving One
A loving One
A saving One
Have no fear
For He will save you
If you so want
He will save you

Today

Today I watched as an old man bent over to pick up something off the sidewalk
His movements were slow
The arch on his back seemed to enlarge as he bent down
His knees were stiff
Leaving him to reach from the waist
It seemed a lifetime before he started to make his way back up
He studied his find
To me it looked like a coin
But I wasn’t certain on the denomination
He rubbed his face with his free hand
As wondering what kind of coin he had found
He studied it ever so closely
He then looked up
And saw me watching
He forced a small smile
Then looked back at the coin
Again, his attention seemed to dwell on me
And, our eyes met
I could see deep down into those eyes
See the little boy that once dwelt inside of him
Saw the young teen full of vigour
And I saw the young adult
His eyes told so much
They told of his achievements
His happiness
His sadness
His eyes displayed his life as if it were a motion picture
I read his entire life
In that glance
His eyes then became distant
Cold
I wondered perhaps I had annoyed him
Because of me staring
But, he seemed to look right past me
As if seeing someone else standing where I now stand
I wondered what he was thinking
What he was seeing
As he stared right through me
I watched as this old man
Who was so feeble
Barely putting one foot in front of the other
I watched as he again examined his coin
A find to him
Yet it was nothing to all those that passed by the same coin
The coin seemed to draw on his memory bank
Bringing his past into the present
I would loved to have asked him what he was thinking
Would have loved to have heard his story
Heard about his life
But as I was dwelling on the thoughts
He turned and dropped the coin again
And walked away
I walked up
Picked up the coin
Reading the back of the coin
V-E-Day
V-E-Day

Desert

Am I to be as the desert
With its vastness
Spreading itself across the lands
Will anything grow on me
Do I run from hot to cold
In a matter of hours
Am I not something to stand in awe over
And see the depth
And the breadth of me
Does anyone take time to explore this
Immeasurable one
Who has discovered this new land
Explored it to its utmost
Who has taken time to walk its lands
From north to south
From east to west
Has anyone taken time
To discover all there is to this great land
Who has patience
Who is willing
To walk the lands
Feel the sand under your feet
Feel the air as it brushes across your face
To feel the thirst
And to feel the immense heat
That explodes at noon
And the chill of night
Who is willing
To find this all new land
With its many dips
And valleys
Who is willing to tread across the land
In search of the end
To find all there is to find
Who is willing

TO FIND ME

Why do I search out who I am
my mind
and my feet
taking me here and there
searching
and
searching
where would that person
that is me
to be found
oh, where
Am I to be found
in those I meet
in those I become
closer than a brother
can I be found
in those that briefly
brush through my life
bringing me happiness
bringing me sadness
such memories
I have
tucking themselves
so neatly within my head
memories that have implanted themselves
and
deeply pushing their roots well within
some to become as clouds passing by
others as an oak
solid and strong
can I be found hidden within these memories
Is this who makes me, me
This is where I might be found
Found within all those that I meet
those that have left their mark on me
Yes, this is where I am to be found

Our Spirits

Daily
My true self
That person
Who dwells in this shell
Absorbs other spirits
Spirits that encourage
Spirits that bring me joy
There are spirits of anger
And those of temptation
And frustration
And spirits of happiness
Count the spirits
That cross my path
Which ones enter
And
Which ones do I close the door on
Which ones change my very mood
And can create in me such a different path
Than one that I was walking on
How easily we fall prey
Blindly being led
From place to place
Why do we weaken
To such spirits
That cause such havoc
Within my soul
For I am weak
But I am strong
My body falls prey
But my soul
Does not
For I have dwelling in me
He who was
He who is
And
He who will be
For greater is He
Who dwells in me
Than he that is in
The world

Born In This Period Of Time

We were born in this period of time
This period
This moment in time
For what purpose
Why now
We need to search out
What our purpose is
To be here
In the now.

Faith
Faith stirs the very being
Of someone in search of it
Faith
To bring into the present
What lies beneath the veil
Faith
To dream a dream
And make it reality
Faith
Oh, how we lack faith
Faith to accomplish
That which we dream
Oh how faith dribbles in
Teasing us
Beckoning us
To step into the deep
Oh to take the first step
How difficult
Like a child
Taking their first step
We too
Must step
Into the deep
How deep is the waters
You ask
Deep
Very deep
But we must make that first step
It awaits us
Calling us
Oh
Where is your faith
Why do we doubt
When we are told
By the Almighty
That we, too, can bring our dreams
About
Yet
We linger
Why are we lingering
We lack faith
We lack the faith
That we so desire
We have lost out on so much
Dreams gone by the wayside
Desires filtered out
Through our minds
Our dreams
Desires
Are there
Hidden behind the veil
What is wrong with us
Cannot you see
It is there
Awaiting you
Yet you lack faith
You lack faith

Trust

When you have been hurt
Why is it so difficult
To find trust
When it has so hidden itself
From you
Where does one go
To find trust again
Where does one look
Does it lie
Within the depths
Of your very being
Was it ever there
To begin with
When does trust
Enter you
Are we born with it
Is it something
We acquire
Why does trust leave
So quickly
When hurt steps
Into our mind
Where must I look
For this trust
That I once held onto
So tight
Oh where?

At times
I am
Like a

Lying at the bottom
Of

This shell of skin

God so graciously gave me this shell
That I may dwell in all my days on earth
It encases me
Makes me different than anyone else
Each has their own identity
This coat of skin I wear
Over me
Shelters me
I wear this coat all my life
As I grow, so does my coat
Stretching
Shrinking
Aging
But, I am inside
The real me
The one that allows me to breathe
Eat
Smell
Feel
I have a spirit
And a soul
My soul
Allowing me desires
Emotions
Passion
Decisions
Oh, where will my soul go
When it leaves this coat of flesh
Where will it go
My spirit returns to God
My flesh to dust
But, my soul
My soul

Those that cross my Path

We have those that come into our life
And quickly pass
Some who stop for a moment and rest
Then there are those who slow down enough to leave an impression
And then there are those that come and leave a mark
With each one that crosses my path
They become a part of who I am
Part of my makeup
Part of my being
One day, I will cast off this garment
That has closely covered me
And I will step forth
Into a glorious light
No more will I remember the number
Of those that passed
Of those that left their mark
No more will I carry a part of them
No more will they enter my mind
For I have moved on
And only God knows
He is what guides me
He is the One I serve
So to those that have made a difference in me
And left their mark
Do not worry
For you have entered into me
If not by flesh
But by spirit
And if good or bad
You have made a difference in who I am
I am who I am
God's child

Unrest

Unrest layers the skies
Falling on the lands
On the cities
On the families
Of the earth
The spirit
Of
Unrest
Applying itself
Over and over
Again
Reaching from east
To west
And
North
To
South
The peoples
Of the earth
Have outstretched arms
Gathering in this spirit
Of unrest
Drawing it in on themselves
Oh
What will the outcome be
What will the outcome be

The Depth of Me

What is the depth of me
And, the breadth of me
I can reach into the highest of heavens
And feel the depth of the deepest sea
I can feel the expansion of the universe
And return to where I stand
Because He dwells in me
And, I in Him
He moves in me
And talks to me
Let His mind guide me
In all that I do
Where He goes
I can go
Where He dwells
I can dwell
For I am seated
With Him
In the highest of heavens
Seated by His Son
Who is He
He is the great I am
He is the only One
He is the Lord
Of my life
Jesus Christ is His name.

THE HEALER This is for a special friend, but applies to all

Am I not the great Healer
Have I not sent out My Word
To go forth
And preach the Gospel
And heal the sick
Oh, where is your faith
I left you all the tools that you will need
To take you through your life
I have given you life
In an abundance
Yet you flail away
Like a fish out of water
Searching here
Searching there
Looking for the answer
Yet, you by-pass it
As you search the world about
How long must I tolerate
Your searching and searching
When all along
What you seek
Is closer than the breath you breathe
Is closer than the flesh that cloaks you
Seek
You will find
Open up your eyes
Open them I say
For what you seek after
Will be found
It will be found
I say

This was written shortly after my husband started Chemo/Radiation for his cancer of the Lung.

My Anger

What has become of me
Through this dreadful disease
Called Cancer
Where there were times
In days past
That anger and impatience
Slipped from within me
To lash out at those I loved
What is happening to me
To send my love
Off to another room in tears
What have I done to her
And to those around me
Do I want them to feel the pain
That has taken my very being
Do I take pleasure in seeing that they, too, will suffer
I refuse to have what I deemed to be my manhood
Stripped daily away
I no longer feel shame
Or have times of embarrassment
Gone are those days
I feel I have the right to show my anger
I am the one that is suffering
I am the one that this disease has riddled my body
I watch as my loved ones enjoy life.
Able to move swiftly about
Enjoy a good meal
Never seem to tire
While I must sit back
And watch as my life is draining slowly away
Oh that the end will quickly come
I don’t mean to hurt those I love
I am sorry for my times of anger
Sorry for lashing out at you
You are not in my shoes
You have no idea of my thoughts
My heartache
I can only apologize
And hope that you can
See fit to forgive me
For I do love you
And, I always have

LIFE

What is life?
Nothing but mere dust
Gathered from the earth
Formed into man
And breath was blown into this shell
And soul and spirit were placed within this body of dust
By the Almighty God
He allows us to roam this earth
From whence we came
He has given us a period of time
To sow
To water
To reap
Physically and verbally
He allows us to feel love
To see hate
To feel the pain of the death of loved ones
He will take us to the end
And return us to the earth
For others to walk upon us
Our spirit He takes back
Our breath He takes away
Our soul?
Our soul
This body, turns to dust
To blow in the wind
Taking us to places we had dreamed about
To places we feared to tread
This dust, once had breath
Once had life
Once had a soul
Dust. Blowing in the breeze
Going to and fro
Until the end
Until the end
Our soul?
Our soul.

I Hear a Cry

I hear the cry of a father for his children
A cry to sit up--
Take notice.

You see your children now on their own
Sitting back--relaxing
No need of the father’s teaching
No need of discipline
We have matured
What need do we have of our father?

I see you-- the father of your family
Your church family
You see them grow cold
Taking no notice of the wisdom that you give out
We have no need of your wisdom
No need of your love---
So we think

Wise words are from God
We live in a day where only the wise words of the teacher will hold us grounded
Oh children,
Listen to the words
Listen to the teaching
For they are food for your souls
They are given to you because of love
Love of a heavenly Father
Love of a Church father
Oh people
Take heed
For there is passion being passed out to you
The passion of one who loves you so much

We need our father
We need his teachings
We will never be fully matured
Until God takes us home
God has placed our Church father over us
He has placed us in his home
Under his care
He is held responsible for us
As a wayward child goes astray
The parent feels to blame
They felt that perhaps they did not teach what should have been taught
Yet, the child, they have their own will
And God gave us a will
And that will is to love the Father
Listen to His words
And His words are food through our Church father.

Murky waters This was written the day before the Nuclear disaster in Japan.

Murky waters
Running deep
Covering the land
A floating bottle
A broken branch
Mountains melting
Babies crying
Mothers wailing
Dogs howling
Birds taking flight
Animals scurrying
Humans running
Eyes searching
Darkened skies
A hush across the lands
Silence

Created Perfect

We were all created perfect
All of us
Who me?
You ask
Yes, you
But I see I am not perfect
I see others who are not perfect
How can this be?
I created all perfect
All
Whose eyes are you looking through
Whose eyes?
Yours
Or
Mine?
Man sees the outside
I see the inside
I have created
All perfect
All
There is nothing
That I did not create
Perfect
Nothing

Good To Be Found

There is good to be found

In every human being

It will be as panning for pure gold

And

Happy is the man

That discovers it!

A Speck in the Universe

Are we not a speck
In this vast universe
A mere speck
Taking up a spot
Existing for a moment
In this immense
Period of time
That God has so provided
He gave us life
And a time for everything
Under Him
Through Him
In Him
Are we not part of who
He is
He is the great I am
He is the creator
Of all heaven and earth
We, His creation
Created to please Him
Yet
How often do we please Him
We wander around
Going to and fro
Taking no time to wonder
Why we are here
For what reason
There must be a reason
Oh
To find the reason
This is a gift from God
Himself

Mankind

What has befallen mankind

What dismay

Where does one run to

What has man done to the earth

That God gave them

What have they done

The skies are falling

The oceans roar

The land shakes

The stars in the heaven drop like leaves

The earth moves off its axis

Rocking to and fro

Oh, what has man done

To the earth that God gave them

To plant and to reap

Oh, man planted and he reaped

But what did he plant

And what now is he reaping

What has man to do to save himself

And his family

What has man to do

Tears

Can anyone count the tears

That are shed behind closed doors

For a love that is gone

For a hurt that has crushed the heart

Can anyone know what the mind is

What is going through and planting its seed

Can anyone know what creates the deep hurts

That one feels when their love is gone

Perhaps that love has walked away

Or perhaps is lost

But, perhaps death has stepped in

And taken that love away

Does anyone know the emptiness

Does anyone really know the hurt

That one feels when that love has been taken

By death

Oh, to feel the loss of your love to another

Is hurtful

Or for that love to say they don’t love you

What is hurtful

But to lose a love through death

Is a battle that cannot be fought

A battle that you cannot see your enemy

Yet, you know that enemy has taken your love

And you no longer can see that love

That love is gone

Gone to the winds

Gone to the air

Just gone

Just a memory

What can one cling to

When your love has been taken

Can anyone know that deep hurt

The pain and struggles that you feel

Oh the pain

Cuts through you like no other

How long does one feel the loss

Days, weeks, months, years

Does it ever diminish

Oh how death takes its sting

It is the living that feel that sting

Not the dead

The living

They feel this sting, daily, weekly, yearly

And that sting is replaced by loneliness

The Sun

As the sun rises in the east

It brings light to the inhabitants below

And moves slowly from east to west

Passing over

Young lovers walking hand in hand

Some are marrying

Parting

A mother giving birth

Death of a loved one

Happiness

Sadness

Laughter

Children begging

Learning

A thief heading home with his catch

Someone is taking a life

Snuffing it out like a candle

Great men sitting around the table

Planning how to protect their country

Others sit and plan military moves

To grasp what is not theirs

Wars are being fought

Lies are being told

Secrets revealed

Eating

Starving

Running

Walking

If the sun could talk

Reveal its secrets

As is slowly sets in the west

Only to rise again in the east

Cancer

What is this that has taken me so forcibly

Has wrapped its arms and legs around me

And draining me of my strength

My pride

My desires

What has worked its way into my very being

And set up its place of abode

You have taken over this body

That still had dreams

Plans

Desires

You have robbed me

Daily you take of me

My hope dwindles

I question about life

And death

I still had so much to live for

Places to go

Things I wanted to do

You are robbing me of those dreams

Replacing them with your plans for me

Plans that I don't want

Did I open the door to you

Did I make a place for you

And welcomed you into me

No doubt I have

The foolishness of our youth

Captures us

We think we can escape you

But there is no escape

For me now

At one time I could have turned my back to you

Refused you entry

But I never thought I would fall prey

It would always be someone else

That would fall under your spell

I waited too long

To cast you out

Wasted all those years

That have past

And those that could have been

Gone they are now

Too late for me

How dreadful this is

I am not content

Not happy

My God only knows my end

And when

He only knows when my time is up

I could have had so much more

But stubborn I was

Too proud to walk away

And now I will answer for my stubbornness

And will have to accept what has befallen me

Daily I watch as my body is gathered up into its web

Like a spider taking over its prey

Slowly wrapping its web over and under

Until it has completely consumed its target

And this I have no choice but to wait

Poem I wrote while watching Bud, (my husband who was dying of cancer) out on the deck listening to the teens next door in the pool
.by Gail Holditch Adams on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 5:28pm.

Youthful Laughter

I hear the sound of laughter around me

Coming from neighbouring yards

Youth, in their slot in life

Enjoying the sun

The vigour

The passion

That comes with their time in life

I felt it too

I had those feelings

Of passion

Of love

Of frolicking in the sun

Of dancing under the stars

Of feeling the warmth of the opposite sex

My time here on earth is dwindling away

My life being erased by a giant eraser

Slowly rubbing me out

I no longer dwell on those things of youth

I no longer feel the passion I once felt

My heart turns to stone

My eyes are dim

My hearing gone

Where has my time gone here on earth

Have I wasted what was given to me

Have I abused the time I had

No longer can I just go back

Start all over again

I hurt

For those around me

For myself

My thoughts stream back

Like rushing waters

Flooding me

Washing me over and over again

I try to re-capture that feeling of youth

Try to remember back to my time when all things were right

God has placed a marker on me

A time for me to go

Like everyone before me

And after me

The time will come

The bell will toll

Calling me home

Home

Where my memories will fade

My hurts will disappear

A new life will form within me

Taking over this sick old body

Again, youthfulness will ever be present

No longer will pain and misery flood my very being

For we are just passing through earth

Dwelling only for a minute or two

A time to make the most of what was dealt to us

Yet, we all take life for granted

Another day will dawn

A time to make up

To apologize

To ask for forgiveness

We put it off planning on tomorrow

Tomorrow I will do it

Then before you know it, time has slipped away

Leaving a shell of a body

No longer caring to apologize

To ask for forgiveness

To tell someone that you love them

To hold their hand

To hold them tight

And everything will be alright

We try to remember back to our youth

Through the laughter that permeates my very being

My youth has slipped away

So quickly it has been taken

My life ahead is what I shall dwell on

A new life that will unfold as it should

And I will dance upon the skies

And everything will be alright.

This Earth

What is pouring down on us
Upon this earth
Which was made so perfect
Ashes and rock
Pouring down
Upon the earth
What has happened
To bring all this about
What has man done
To the earth that
God so gave him
To nourish
To plant
To harvest
What has man done
That brought all this about
We seek
And
We search
Out the answers
Can anyone know
Can anything be done
Before it is too late
We have become a people of technology
A people with much wisdom
A people too clever for their own good
We know it all
We think
Yet, all is crumbling
Before our very eyes
Crumbling
Ashes and rock
Ashes and rock

This Classroom of Life

Our classroom
Earth
We enter
As a new-born
Being taught
From our first breath
By
Our greatest of teachers
Our parents
As we leave the baby stage
We enter another grade in this most
Wonderful school
Called life
We learn
From those with more knowledge
We learn
From our disappointments
And our achievements
And our friends
Class after class
Then
We learn again
When
We enter the class
Of
Being on our own
We continue to take lessons
From
Those that cross our paths
Those we become greater
Than friends with
Then another great lesson
The mating with another
And see the most
Wonderful
Product ever to
Come forth
Our learning is never ended
We never stop learning
Never stop taking lessons
And
Courses
Until we graduate
From this most
Unusual academy
Called life
Our lessons now complete
No more to learn of
